...Continued from "Shelters"
The new Yukon shelter also created the first co-ed shelter located outside of the Downtown Eastside, the area historically called Skid Row. The event was celebrated throughout the shelter and homeless community as it significantly moved towards establishing the critical number of beds needed within the City to respond to the increased numbers of people on the streets.
Funding Partners
The Yukon shelter was established thanks to the extensive partnerships between shelter providers, all levels of government, the health authority, faith community, and many individuals and organizations.
The capital funds came from the Federal Government’s homeless Initiative, BC Housing (provincial government), the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, the Real Estate Foundation, Vancouver Foundation and individuals.
Operating funds are provided by the provincial government through BC Housing, and from the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority SMART Funds. Collectively, these partners ensured that shelter beds were established throughout the community. The shelters are moving to where the people are.
