Kingsgate Mall raises funds to benefit Lookout Community programs

In a true Community effort, the Merchants and Management of Kingsgate Mall have added their fundraising weight to the Kingsgate Corridor community cleanup project.

The Community Clean up program is an initiative of the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association, and is carried out by volunteers –  the tenants of the Lookout Yukon Tenancy, under the direction of Tenant Support Worker, Robert.  The tenants work closely with the City of Vancouver’s Steve Drake, Sanitation Engineer, reporting large items that the City needs to pick up.

The Kingsgate Shopping Bag fundraiser is supported by twenty six merchants selling 5,000 cloth shopping bags. Proceeds are to come to Lookout’s Tenancy Program, specifically for the community clean up program.

Funds will be used for expansion of the street cleanup program, purchasing tools such as a pressure washer, and equipment for window washing or  equipment for snow removal.

The volunteer teams of between seven and twelve systematically map out areas of the community and, twice weekly, pick up litter.  Their team leader, also a tenant-volunteer, organizes the route, records found items, and liaises with the City.

The project is a win-win. The community benefits from clean streets. The tenants build resumes, build business contacts, and build confidence. Already some tenants have been offered paid employment, and are looking at ways to continue to give back to the community.
