JIM GREEN RESIDENCE

...Continued from "Supportive"

Five of the 66 apartments are wheelchair handicapped units, with the entire building being wheelchair accessible. The building has roof deck patios and wraps around a large courtyard which provides secure, quiet places for the tenants to sunbathe, barbecue and visit with each other.

An additional two-bedroom unit backs up local emergency resources, providing a temporary refuge for women or families from the Downtown Eastside who need interim housing while they locate appropriate housing elsewhere.

A Tenant Board helps run the Jim Green Residence. They provide leadership among the tenants as a whole, speaking up for those who are reluctant to bring issues or needs forward. The Board organizes events, provide food for BBQs and parties, and assist staff in working the practicum students. The Administrative offices of Lookout are also located on the premises.

Staff are on duty from 6 am to 2 am seven days per week to provide support, advice, assistance and lifeskill training to those who request aid. Greater Vancouver Mental Health Services Society has given a grant which augments the operating budget to give tenants the extra support needed.

Funding Partners
Lookout gives special thanks to the Province of British Columbia for creating a provincial housing strategy which provides 100% funding and includes targeting those at greatest risk, the homeless. The Province of B.C. funded all construction costs and provides the ongoing operational budget. We wish to commend the City of Vancouver for their continued policies supporting affordable housing and for leasing the land to us for this Project.

Homelessness and shelterlessness are increasing throughout the city and region. It is projects like this that reduce some of the pressure for those in most need.
